Remember When Avocado Green Was all the Rage?

Remember when avocado green was all the rage? The Atlanta home inspector remembers – do you?

Trends drift in and out of societal bounds, and seem to eventually come full circle.  Although the seventies fads of shag carpet, wood panel, and in this instance, avocado green appliances, has not made it back en vogue – who’s to say that it won’t come back around one day?  Who determines what is kitschy or cool? Who gets to decide what all the rage is these days?  Is there a  room full of hipsters and cool cats who say, “whoa, dude – this will be the most far-out, radical, and phat item to cross generational gaps?”  There is a part of us that thinks, yes, yes indeed, Virginia there is a room full of these characters. There is another part that thinks, no, no, it is the marketing gurus of goods and services who develop innovative catchphrases and describe the multitude of swag attached to your wall oven.  It is at that moment that we realize a) wall-ovens must conform to a trendy ideal  or  b) my wall-oven is HOT  (pun intended).     So, how do you know if your appliances are modern, retro, awesome, the bees-knees, or like, totally, gag me with a spoon uncool?

We see our fair share of stainless steel these days.  Is it popular because of the way it looks or the way it performs? How is it determined that a certain brand is labeled gourmet  even though it has the same components of another brand that is labeled lower end?   Also, why do people like certain styles or brands over their competitors? Is it because of tradition – “my mom had a Brand K, so I must have that also”, or “I read about this one in a trade journal that purports this one to be the best energy saver, the most reliable, and the most cost effective choice” ?   OR   is it this one – “ I don’t know. Somebody told me it was the best” ?    Jinkies – it quite possibly is all of those options!

Matching your client’s personality to the amenities within a home can be daunting. However, it is important to note your client’s preferences and tastes. Obviously, the client buying the home with the above avocado appliances found them interesting. The client bought the home despite the un-hip vibe of the cooktop. It still functioned, it had a bit of character, and it fit the entire retro ambiance of the home.  This client was not going to rip out everything and upgrade, because they appreciated it the way it was.  However, a different client might have also bought the house with every intention of gutting the fixtures and re-vamping the feng-shui.    This is where agents (and we see several on a weekly basis) must know their clients needs, wants, likes, dislikes and lifestyles.  It is important.

The next time you,  your client, your agent or your best bud visit a domicile, take a moment to soak in the scene. Do the flowers on the wall bother you at all? ( yes, that is an intentionally placed Statler Brothers reference)  Does the crystal chandelier with the gold chain evoke eye pain? Did you just call that square, cold, food keeper thingy an icebox? Well, maybe you have just found that house to call home. AND when you do find that abode that beckons your name, don’t forget to have it inspected by a certified home inspection company that really knows  its….   home inspection business!!

My first apartment not only had Avocado appliances but, avocado colored carpet.  Don't miss it one bit.  But, good question as to who decides what is cool.

Depends on appliances:)

But you'd probably agree that new stainless appliances look beautiful( always wow factor of the house), consume less electricity( star) and just pleasurable to use.

Haaha, Peggy, you are so right: carpets in older houses are sometimes (...).

I was showing REO fixer house yesterday: each room was ...... bright: bright purple, bright red, bright green, so  on.

We both were destructed by colors of each space. some of the room had 2-3 different colors on the walls. And carpet........matching:) Well, someone really liked that ( not sure that  future buyers will appreciate ,though....:)

Lenn - sorry that I made you remember :)

Peggy - you were avocadoed out in that first apartment, it sounds!

Inna - not denying the wow factor, in general. just saying everyone is different and knowing your clients (which it sounds as if you know yours) helps in determining what they will think is "cool".

I would hate to see shag carpets come back into vogue. They were the best, most effective dirt traps ever and they could never be cleaned. Ugh!

BTW look up the definition of the English slang term 'shag', if you don't already know.

I have this oven and the element just burned out. Would you happen to know the model and serial number of this gem? Mine is so old that it's gone. Thank you!
